Cortex has developed a new way to use the VHF radio and to to make DCS calls very easy and intuitive.
DSC (Digital Selective Calling) was developed to replace a voice call. Cortex allows you to identify vessels by their AIS transmission, which includes their MMSI number. To make a DSC call you used have to enter the vessel's MMSI # you wished to call, and then press the DSC transmit button.
Cortex has made this calling method much simpler, by selecting the vessel you wish to contact on the plotter, or on the directory on the handset
At the bottom of the directory after the vessel "Cortex-Hub" is selected- tap the bottom right icon to initiate the DCS call.
Call the vessel
Using the plotter is an ideal way to contact a vessel that may present a collision concern, so that you can discuss and agree on maneuverings to pass safely.
Here we select a vessel off our starboard bow, We tap on the vessel symbol on the plotter and it is shown in brackets, and at the bottom of the screen , we see the vessel is called "Hush". We tap the bottom right side and we can now make a DSC call to the vessel "Hush" by tapping the call icon.
